Milford High School has a new head football coach: Joe Todd, most recently the defensive coordinator for the Mansfield High School team.
Milford Athletic Director Richard Piergustavo confirmed the appointment Wednesday.
The Scarlet Hawks ended their last season 2-9, under Coach Tom Cullen.
The football team will move to the Hockomock League this coming year, as all other athletics have already done. But Piergustavo has said that shift had nothing to do with the decision to search for a new football coach outside Milford.
Cullen, a physical education teacher at Milford High School, led the team for five years.
In a press release issued Wednesday, Piergustavo said Todd was the unanimous choice of the Milford High School Football Coach search committee, and was among 30 applicants.
Todd was the Defensive Coordinator at Mansfield High School for the past two seasons. A 1997 graduate of Mansfield High School, he played college football at Hofstra University where he was voted to the 2000 Division 1AA All-Independent team at Linebacker.
He had brief stints with the New York Jets in 2001 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. In addition to coaching at Mansfield High School, his experience includes stints at Dedham High School in 2010, Iona College in 2005, the University of New Hampshire in 2006, the University of Rhode Island in 2007, and Wagner College in 2008 and 2009.
"We feel that coach Todd brings the whole package to our program," Piergustavo said, in the written statement. "He has a great deal of experience and is dedicated to helping student-athletes reach their potential on the field and in the classroom. We are fortunate to have him run our football program."
The search committee included: former Milford High School Athletic Director Nick Zacchilli; former Milford High Football coach and current Hopedale Superintendent Dennis Breen; former Natick High School Athletic Director and Football coach Tom Lamb; Milford High School Principal Michael Tempesta; Milford High School Assistant Principal Mike McIntyre; Milford High School Athletic Trainer Jonathan Raskow; community member David Pyne; and Piergustavo.
