Milford High Guidance Director Arrested on Assault Charges

Peter Bruce, director of guidance for Milford High School, was arrested by Framingham Police Friday on three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. He is accused of using his car to chase three kids on bikes in a parking garage.

The director of guidance at Milford High School faces felony assault charges in Framingham District Court, following his arrest Friday on three charges of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Peter Bruce, 41, of 4 Bishop St., Apt. 403, Framingham, was arrested by Framingham Police after an incident in which he was accused of using a car to chase three youths on bikes in a parking garage.

Police responded to the Bishop Street Garage, after receiving a report that a man in a vehicle was "chasing three kids on their bikes" in the garage, said Framingham Police Lt. Ron Brandolini.

On arriving, police found Bruce yelling at the kids — ages 10, 11 and 12 — and one boy was on the ground, injured. Bruce did not hit the children with the vehicle, but one boy hurt himself when he fell off his bike, according to Brandolini.

"He did not hit the kids with his car," Brandolini said. "One of the kids did fall trying to get away and scraped his leg."

Police spoke to the children and Bruce, who denied chasing them, before arresting him. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in Framingham District Court.

Bruce could not be reached Wednesday for comment.

Bruce was hired in July 2011 as director of guidance, career and academic enhancement at Milford High School. He directs a department that includes five full-time counselors and an adminsitrative assistant.

He was placed on adminstrative leave, with pay, effective Monday, said Kathleen Perry, an assistant superintendent. He will remain under that status until further notice, she said.

In his absence, guidance services will be assumed by the remaining staff.

Bruce earned $36,427 for the six months he was employed by the town in 2011, according to the Milford annual report. His current salary was not immediately available.

In a feature story, published on the Town Crier website shortly after his arrival, Bruce said he had spent 17 years as a guidance counselor and director of guidance in Massachusetts before taking a position in Charleston, SC. He holds a master's degree in school counseling.

That's just great! Additionally, I wonder why the "Director of Guidance" at our high school has to live at Bishop Street Apts. Widely known for drugs, prostitution, and other crimes. I can't wait for him to help my kids work out their futures!

Interesting, I had never heard that about the Bishop Street Condo area. Are you from Framingham?

I work down there. The residents in those condos seem to be professional types.

And, why is he only being paid $36K? And, why would he take a job for only 36K with his supposed backround?

Hi, I just re-wrote that sentence to make it more clear. The annual report salary figures are for the 2011 calendar year. He would have only been employed about six months.

36K for 6 months to do his job isn't bad at all.

Not to rain on anyone's parade...but we may want to get all of the facts before we rush to judgement. If it makes you feel better to talk trash without really knowing the entire situation then by all means continue.

Not a great fan of Mr. Tremblay but not really sure why he would have to explain this to anyone at this point. Not really his mess just yet. Certainly a lot of open questions on the incident but I have to think this is an open issue at this point and not something everyone should jump on with assumptions. (I don't know the man or have any children in MHS)

I have 4 children in the milford school system so when I see a story like this I have a right to worry and to question mr tremblays hiring standards. If the man didn't do anything wrong then why was he arrested?

if this man had a clean record and good references/resume/interview...there would be no indication that something like this was going to happen. it's not the superintendent's fault that an employee of his got arrested. however, if he had a prior history, then this certainly will need to be explained.

Do you think they have a crystal ball when they do their hiring?? Do you people really think he would have been hired if anything like this was on his record?

The story isn't clear enough for me to pass bad judgement on this guy. Maybe he saw the kids trying to break into or vandalize cars in that garage. He really should of called the police rather than chase them down in his car though. But just because a person is arrested doesn't mean he's guilty. I wonder if there's been any complaints of break ins or vandalism in that garage in the past.

What does it tell you? Booking photos are like licenses. Noone ever looks good/normal in them. He just got arrested for cripes sake. He should look terrible. And NO he's not a friend of mine and I had no idea who he was until this article.

before and after photos can be interesting... In the Town Crier photo linked in the article, it's the "before"... in the booking photo here, it's the "after". He's wearing the same shirt in both...

EllaG, I am from Framingham originally. Initially, I thought he lived further down Bishop street either at Bishop Gardens or Willis St. Apts (I guess that's off of Bishop) or at another property on Bishop. The area is awful. And, you could not pay me to live there if I had a Master's degree in anything. It looks like the address given is actually at newer condos built in the old Dennison Plant. Nicer apt., still a bad area. Don't know why my comment is so interesting. It's down town Framingham!

Honestly, I bought a home in the downtown Framingham area. Been living in south framingham for almost a decade and I am so sick of the nonsense people (that don't even live here) talk about it. I have fantastic neighbors. We keep an eye on each others properties and lend a hand where it's needed. Yes the town has it's issues, so do all of the surrounding towns. We are a MUCH larger town, comes with the territory. I have lived in some of the area towns and Milford is among the worst! The drug problem there is like the Milford cultural norm . Kids from all walks of life there are involved in drugs, and it is normal in your 40s-50's to still be out on the weekends doing lines at the local watering holes. Drugs in Milford have been a serious issue for generations now and the problem is invisible to the townies. I wonder the percentage of kids that graduated from there over the past 20 years were at least beginning to experiment with drugs, and how many out of those are still on them (or are dead etc). Milford needs to stop sticking their noses up and take a look around. That place is cursed & fails to recognize and or fix the problems (too busy judging others). That’s why I found it interesting.

The same can be said about Milford. Its amazing the nonsense that we hear from Framingham residents. Namely two of your residents. In fairness though, those two rip on your town as well.

I would disagree about the extent that you criticize Milford. Yes, there is a problem with drugs. However, you will find that every town has its share of drug issues. Thats the new American way unfortunately. That being said, I happen to feel pride both in Milford and the people of Milford. I would like though to see a comparison of area towns showing drug-related crimes per capita.

EllaG, if you are happy in your home in Framingham, then great! And, I never said Milford was all that great. I moved here 9 years ago just before the thousands of illegal immigrants. I lived in Framingham for 30 years. I know every single street. I was never all that thrilled with Milford either. I grew up in a different area but, I promise I know what I'm talking about when it comes to Framingham. And, again.... The newer condos in the Dennison building are nice enough. I thought it was another set of apartments (that he lived in) on the same street. In the 1970s, 80s, 90s, Downtown Framingham was a challenge at best. Seedy. In the last 10-12 years it is dangerous. I could go on. But, I won't. I don't want to get into a fight over which town has more problems.

In his defense, he was extremely helpful in aiding my questions during senior year.

Too bad his decisions led his to such an awful action. They are clearly unacceptable.
