68 Milford High School Students are Adams Scholars
The following students will qualify for free tuition at a state college or university because they are eligible for an Adams Scholarship.
Sixty-eight seniors at Milford High School are eligible for an Adams Scholarship, a state scholarship that will cover the cost of tuition for eight semesters at a state university or college.
The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education. The scholarship covers tuition only; fees and room and board are not included.
According to the requirements, Massachusetts public high school students become eligible for the scholarship when they:
- score at the Advanced and Proficient levels on grade 10 MCAS tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. (A student must earn a score of Advanced on the ELA or Mathematics test and a score of Proficient or higher on the other test); AND
- have combined scores from the MCAS ELA and Mathematics tests that place them in the top 25 percent of students in the graduating class in their district.

Nice for the kids, but the state pulls the old bait and switch with this award.

"Psssst. We forgot to tell you: At Massachusetts state schools, tuition is only a small nominal fee (under $900). The real cost is hidden in the 'Curriculum Fee' which is $9400/year.

Actually, it's $1800 a year, for two semesters. So, the award at UMass Amherst is worth about $7,200 over the four years. Anyway, an interesting arrangement. Usually the tuition is the lion's share of the bill at a college. First time I've seen this.

My son (a junior) also won this award. I was so excited that he received free tuition thinking we just got handed the lottery until I researched it to. Granted I am so proud of him and I am happy because, yes, every little bit counts....but the award is a little misleading.

Another little "glitch" in the system - the Adams Scholarships apply to all Massachusetts state colleges and univerisities except Mass College or Art and Design.
