Avis E. (McKinley) Barrows, 85, a longtime resident of Mendon, formerly of Milford, died Sun., May 8, in St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bedford. She was the wife of the late Harold C. “Bud” Barrows Jr., who died in 1985.

She was born in Milford, daughter of the late Arthur W. and Effie Ann (MacDonald) McKinley. She graduated class salutarian at Milford High School in 1943 and was a graduate of Becker Business School.

Mrs. Barrows was a bookkeeper with her husband’s school bus contracting business that served the Mendon-Upton Regional School District. Later, she was a bookkeeper for Miscoe Springs Soda Co. for 25 years. She previously worked for the former Draper Corp. in Hopedale, Western Union in Milford and the former Grant’s Store in Milford. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Milford. She enjoyed knitting, working with stained glass, photography, and the outdoors.

She leaves a daughter, Elaine M. and her husband, Gerry Boudreau, of Tiverton, R.I.; a sister, Marie S. Berardi of South Grafton; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two daughters, Francia A. Moore (Richard) and Marjorie H. Osborne (Richard), and her siblings, William A. McKinley (Emily), Albert E. McKinley, C. Louise Drew (Bernard), Ruth P. Robinson (Emerson) and Shirley J. Moore (Frank).

Funeral services will be held Fri., May 13, at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, 39 Exchange St., Milford. Interment will follow in Swan Dale Cemetery, Mendon. Visiting hours will be Thurs., May 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St., Milford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
