Arlene R. (Viele) Blackmore, 87, formerly of Hopedale, died Sun., April 10, in the Blaire House of Milford. She was the wife of Joseph R. Blackmore Jr.

She was born and raised in Milford, daughter of the late George O. and Hazel (Williams) Viele, and graduated from Milford High School in 1941. She later graduated from Practical Nursing School at Keefe Technical School in Framingham. She lived many years in Milford and 12 years in Framingham before moving to Hopedale in 1983.

Mrs. Blackmore was an expert straw operator for the Kartiganer Hat Company in Milford and Upton for many years. Later, she was a licensed practical nurse at the former Framingham Union Hospital, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Union Evangelical Church in Hopedale, where she was active in the Women’s Society. She enjoyed sewing and gardening and was the leader of the Senior Walking Club in Hopedale.

Besides her husband of 68 years, she leaves a daughter, Joan M. and her husband, Ronald Weetman, of Rochester, N.Y.; a sister, Evelyn Hayden of Chicopee; three granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia E. Gundolfi of Milford, and a sister, Mae Revell.

A funeral service will be held Thurs., April 14, at 1 p.m. in the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St., Milford. Interment will follow in the North Purchase Cemetery, Milford. Calling hours will be Thurs., April 14, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Union Evangelical Church, Memorial Fund, 25 Dutcher St., Hopedale, MA 01747; or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
